Logging on to RSS for the first time

When retirees log on to Retiree Self-Service (RSS) for the first time, they must reset their passwords. They must also set up forgotten password help. This is a series of questions and answers that only the retiree might know, such as childhood nickname or first car. If retirees forget their password in the future, they can answer these security questions to gain access to reset their password.

Passwords must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Must be at least eight characters in length.

  • Must contain at least one number.

  • Must contain at least one letter.

  • Must be different from last four passwords used for this retiree.

  • Should be something the retiree will remember.

Important: Passwords are case sensitive, meaning capitalization matters. If your password is "MyPassword" and you enter "mypassword" the system will not accept it.

To log on to RSS for the first time

  1. In the User ID field, enter your seven-digit retiree ID.

  2. In the Password field, enter your password.

Your initial default password for RSS consists of the last two digits of your SSN, the first three letters of your birth month (must be upper case), the birth day including the leading zero, and your full birth year. For example:

    SSN: XXX-XX-XX99
    Birth Date: January 01, 1910
    Password: 99JAN011910

**This password is only temporary. You will be prompted to change your password as soon as you log in.

If you have trouble entering your default password :

    • All City retirees (except for DOE retirees), please contact your pension agency.
    • DOE retirees should contact HR Connect at (718) 935-4000

A message appears, indicating that your password has expired.

  3. Click the link to change your password.

  4. In the Password field, enter your initial password.

  5. In the New Password and Confirm Password fields, enter the new password you want to use.

  6. Click the Change Password button.

The Setup Forgotten Password Help page appears.

  7. Enter an answer for at least five of the questions provided. Use the following guidelines:

    • The security answers are not case sensitive, so capitalization does not matter. If you specify that you grew up on "Main Street" and then forget your password a month later, you can enter "main street" and the system will still accept it.

    • Each answer must be unique.

  8. Click the OK button.

  9. A message appears confirming that you have changed your password successfully.

  10. Click the OK button.
